Russia has one of the highest rates in the world in the spread HIV infection. Therefore it is essential for position Russia’s evangelical believers to form a position for it’s response to the problems of HIV/AIDS. Earlier the threat of infection seemed improbable but now due to the nature of its spread it has become a real threat to people who are not included in “risk groups”. Experts warn of the danger of an avalanche increase of the disease HIV/AIDS.
Official statistics indicate that an average of 6 people is diagnosed with HIV-infection every hour. Experts say that this is understatement and that the real numbers of HIV-infection exceed the official data by 5-10 times! Previously there were relatively well defined “risk groups” but now the pattern of infection blurred and difficult to predict. It is necessary to take into account that in the spread of this disease the probability of contact with HIV-positive individuals who are unaware of their status is increasing. Understanding this fact should cause each person to realize the universal threat of HIV. There are now growing numbers of infection by heterosexual transfer. The most vulnerable group for HIV/AIDS in Russia is women.
The church is called to help reach out to people where ever they are. Christ did not reject people condemned by society. Perfect people do not exist, and it is not righteous people, but sinners who are called to repent.
For many years the Russian Union of Evangelical Christian Baptists ‘Russia Inland’ has dealt with the problems connected to the spread of HIV/AIDS and its prevention.
Employees have been trained under the program “Teach the teacher” by organization ACET and have independently developed two programs of promoting a healthy way of life which are carried out among children and teenagers, and also among adults: parents, experts working with youth, journalists, people living with HIV/AIDS and medical workers.
The purpose of these programs is to teach people to make correct choices in life, to live with and to look after people with HIV/AIDS. “Russia Inland” provides education for charities together with the partner AIDS-centers.
